What people didn't realize—what I didn't realize until after I was already committed to this career—was that doping was organized and everywhere in the peloton. Doping wasn't the exception, it was the norm.
So rather than condemn the (late) whistleblowers, let's celebrate even more those who DID speak BEFORE they had to. As some of those names above have already mentioned on Twitter, let's use this moment to celebrate those who were courageous and outspoken from the start. Those who had their reputations smeared by the bullying tactics of Armstrong PR because they dared to go against the grain of cycling's doping culture. Those who were slandered and marginalized for standing up to the dishonesty, and who often retired from their sport because their position in it became untenable, often at Armstrong's hand.
Let's think then of Betsy and Frankie Andreu, David Walsh, Paul Kimmage, Emma O'Reilly, Andy Hampsten, Scott Mercier, Darren Baker, Christophe Bassons, and all the others who spoke first, or walked away. Theirs is the example to praise, and today is a day to celebrate them.
So far, just about the only statements of support Romney has managed to elicit have come from discredited neocons (Bill Kristol, Liz Cheney), paleo-cons (Donald Rumsfeld, John Bolton), and nutty-cons (Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint). Meanwhile, John McCain and Condoleezza Rice, arguably the G.O.P.’s two most influential voices on foreign policy, have conspicuously failed to criticize Obama, while paying tribute to Ambassador Chris Stevens, the longtime foreign-service officer who was killed.Som flera har sagt, Romney "is not ready for prime time."
“To me, Lisa had the sitting shot,” said Sutton. “Nicola pressured ‘em all to have a crack, but only one person saved pennies at all stages and waited to the final sprint as she was told to do -- Lisa Norden. She ran her perfect race, exactly the race I wanted Nicola to run if there were no problems.”
I could give you an idealistic answer about climbing every mountain. But the truth is, after six national masters cross country titles, and numerous American age-group records, I get tired of people suggesting I’m not a real distance runner because I haven’t run a marathon. The chairman of U.S. Masters Long Distance Running holds this belief. Even the magazine I write for, Running Times—maybe you’ve heard of it?—last year didn’t include me in its age-group rankings, even though I had the fastest 50-plus 5K and 10K times ever for an American in the age division. I consider it my duty to show we 5K/10K and cross country runners can run marathons if we choose to.
I’m really tired of my neighbor, who’s run 5:30 or 6:00 for the marathon, telling me that if I trained harder I could do marathons.
Cycling tried to hide the doping problem, sweeping the debris under the carpet. Even when the stench got too much the UCI found means to silence things, such as the Vrijman Report which looked at L’Equipe’s accusation of positive EPO tests but only let WADA point out institutional failings in the UCI. Now USADA has pulled the rug away and the mess is there for all to see. Athletics, swimming, tennis and other sports probably need to substantially increase testing and introduce a bio passport scheme as soon as possible.
It's laughable to think that Armstrong, a battler who routinely unleashes teams of lawyers against his accusers, would give up now simply because of "the toll this has taken on my family, and my work for our foundation and on me." Or because he doesn't think the USADA's arbitration process is fair. Make no mistake: Armstrong is quitting because anti-doping officials have assembled too many former teammates ready to testify against him, and too much physical evidence, for him to overcome in a fair forum. Much as fans of Armstrong -- and I count myself among them -- wish it weren't so, the greatest cyclist of all time isn't. He is a cheat.
